One of the most sought after Fourth Growths, due in part to its ownership by Château
Lafite Rothschild. It is also the only Fourth Growth in Pauillac. Since the 2000 vintage,
the quality has matched the demand for its stunning Cabernet-dominated (70-80%)
wines, derived from a site on the western side of Lafite. The soils are fine gravel mixed
with aeolian sands on tertiary limestone bedrock.
In the early 18th Century it was the
second wine of Lafite itself, owned by the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur (
referred to as ‘The Wine Prince’ by Louis XV). After a procession of five different
owners in 25 years, it was finally purchased by the Rothschild family in 1962, and they
have spent the last 50 years tending to the quality. It is currently managed by the
legendary director of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), Charles Chevallier.
